Nestled between Wellington Point and Tingalpa Creek on Waterloo Bay, Thorneside is Redlands Coast northern-most \u2013 and geographically smallest \u2013 mainland suburb and retains much of its old village character. It has a small pocket of industrial land.<\/p>\n

Lifestyle<\/h2>\n

You will find some old bayside charm here as well as the cooling breezes which have\u00a0long lured visitors to Redlands Coast. Long foreshore parks provide recreational outlets for all the family, with barbecues, playgrounds and walking and cycling paths.<\/p>\n

Pockets of significant koala habitat and sporting fields add to the charm of bayside Thorneside. This includes William Taylor Sportsground, Aquatic Paradise Park, Beth Boyd Park,\u00a0Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club<\/a>,\u00a0Frank Street Bushland Refuge and Jack and Edna Finney Reserve.<\/p>\n

Shopping<\/h2>\n

The closest major shopping precinct is at Birkdale and it is handy to the popular Wellington Point Village caf\u00e9 and restaurant precinct.<\/p>\n

Schools and colleges<\/h2>\n

The area is surrounded by schools at Birkdale, Wellington Point, Alexandra Hills and Capalaba.<\/p>\n

Getting around<\/h2>\n

Thorneside has its own train station. Transdev Queensland operates regular bus services.<\/p>\n

History<\/h2>\n

The land on Mooroondu Point was originally purchased in the early 1850s by speculator Thomas Lodge Murray-Prior, but by 1882 William Thorne owned much of the land. He lived in\u00a0Mooroondu House<\/em>\u00a0on the corner of Nora Street and Mooroondu Road. The nearby railway station was called Thorne\u2019s siding, later becoming the name of the suburb, Thorneside.<\/p>\n

Thorne was born in Shebbear, Devonshire UK in 1840, to a family that had founded a Christian sect and who sent their children overseas as missionaries. He arrived in Brisbane from London in September 1863 later became an alderman on the Brisbane Municipal Council, served as Chairman of the Tingalpa Divisional Board and was one of those responsible for the formation of the Cleveland Divisional Board in July 1885.<\/p>\n
